The majestic Lachlan Valley Railway steam engine train will chug into Griffith on Wednesday, March 23.
Griffith mayor John Dal Broi is looking forward to meeting the train, along with the Griffith City Band and the Griffith City Junior Band on the city’s platform from 4.30pm.
Councillor Dal Broi said excitment had been building around the steam train’s arrival.
He said the train last visited the city more than 20 years ago.
“We are thrilled to welcome the beautiful old steam train to our city during our Centenary year and offer our residents and visitors a chance to experience a piece of history,” Cr Dal Broi said.
“The Lachlan Valley Railway team has informed us there will be the unmistakable sound of the whistle echoing as it rolls into town.”
The 3237 steam train, built in 1982, will be hauling four compartment, open-windowed style carriages built in the 1930s.
Lachlan Valley Railway will operate shuttles from schools on Easter Thursday and trips from Griffith to Yenda on Good Friday and Easter Saturday and Sunday.
A special trip will be held on Easter Saturday night at Yanco, with guests dining at the Yanco Hotel.
A 10-hour return day trip to Junee is being run on Easter Monday.
Lachlan Valley Railway deputy chairman Luke Bowen, who will be aboard the train with his crew when it comes to Griffith, said the one-of-a-kind 3237 steam engine train was built in the United Kingdom by Beyer Peacock & Co in 1892 and came into service in Australia on February 26, 1893.
“This locomotive was withdrawn on November 1, 1971,” Mr Bowen said.
“In its 78 years of revenue service, from February 26 to 1981 to November 1, 1971, the 3237 ran a total of 2,223,224 miles.”
