Griffith Carevan, a service providing meals and care packs to the disadvantaged and homeless, had a window smashed on Saturday night.
Barbara Penninga from Griffith Neighbourhood House, where the Carevan is kept, said she didn’t know why the service was targeted.
“To come and find broken glass and that our tiny, cute little van has been broken in to is unbelievable,” Mr Penninga said.
“They didn't take anything, the only thing of any value in here is plastic cutlery and some tomato sauce. It's just more work for us, but we'll keep going no matter what.”
The volunteer service has about 40 people on a rotating roster to work in the van, as well as kids, chefs and businesses who donate their time and effort.
Ms Penninga said she believed some floodlights in the driveway where the van is kept may have scared the thieves off. Regardless, she was going to make a sign stating no valuables were kept inside the van.
Carevan chairwoman Deb Longhurst said it was really disappointing.
“I guess it’s one of those things I suppose,” Ms Longhurst said. “I’m pleased it wasn’t more serious and won’t interfere with our operation, that’s the main thing.”
Ms Longhurst said a multi-purpose building, which had already been designed and approved by council, would have prevented the damage if it had been built.
“We could have had the van locked away,” Ms Longhurst said. “It would be good to have a safe place for the Carevan.”
According to Ms Longhurst, a generator had previously been stolen from the Carevan, but it wouldn’t stop the service delivering meals to those in need.
Inspector Kim Traynor from Griffith Local Area Command said a crime scene had been established and police were investigating.
“Anyone with information about the break-in should contact Griffith police on 6969 4299 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” Inspector Traynor said.
