Griffith’s inaugural futsal competition will come to a head on Saturday and while players will put everything on the line for a championship win, the winners won’t be the biggest beneficiaries of the day.

Attendance to futsal at West End Stadium is usually free but this weekend organisers are asking for a gold coin donation that will go to a Solomon Islands junior futsal team.
The idea came about after a group of representative futsal players from Griffith played the Solomon Islands team and saw how little they had.
“When the kids played against the Solomon Islands, they noticed some of them came to the game without shoes but they still ended up wining the whole tournament,” Griffith futsal organiser Rocky Marando said.
“With this gold coin donation, we are going to send them over some equipment.
“While the kids were over there, they became very close with the other teams and they realised how lucky we are over here and wanted to do something to help.”
Everyone is welcome to head on down and check out the matches.
Marando promises an action-packed day as some of Griffith’s best futsal players go head-to-head.
“Fast-paced,” Marando said when asked to describe the game.
“I know a lot of my family and friends find normal soccer a bit boring but they find futsal really exciting.

“There’s always something going on, its non-stop and there are plenty of goals being scored.
“Games only go for half and hour and some matches have 20 or 30 goals.”
The action will kick-off at 10.30am and there will be a live DJ and MC for the day.
The day will culminate when Casella Wines take on The Generali in the premier league grand final at 5pm.
Marando thanked the players and parents for supporting the first year of the competition. He told The Area News earlier this year of the success the first season has had.
“Hearing the feedback from the players and parents, they are all giving us good reports back,” Marando said.
Marando said futsal will be back. With his business partners, Marando hoped to start the season in October.
