Cema Toga lost her battle with breast cancer nearly two years ago after a five-year fight with the disease, but her legacy lives on at Black and Whites.
Inspired by Cema’s courage, Black and Whites have been staging a pink game since 2008 and will donate money raised at Sunday’s match to cancer support group Griffith Can Assist.
Makelesi, 22, said the day was a big occasion on the club’s calendar.
“It’s a pretty major thing for us. It’ll be two years since mum passed away on the 30th of this month,” she said.
“I always think of her, especially with this because she was always here for this game, but this will be the second year she won’t be.
“But Black and Whites get right behind it. We’ve been with them 20 years. My sister and I grew up at this club.”
Black and Whites league tag players will wear pink jerseys and socks on the day, while the men's teams will also don pink socks in support.
Makelesi said her mother was loved and respected by everyone who knew her at the club.
“Some of them are family and some of them are friends that we consider family, I guess,” she said. “Everyone gets behind this day and we get a big turnout from local businesses as well.”
Aside from honouring Cema’s memory, Black and Whites want to beat the Roosters to give their finals hopes a major boost.
Black and Whites are fifth on the ladder but will lose that spot to DPC if they don’t win. Makelesi said she and her teammates had plenty of incentive to play well.
“We’ve had a pretty tough year this year. We’re normally in the top three,” she said.
“It’ll be a cracker of a game, especially because some of the old girls who used to play with us will be playing against us on Sunday.
“Everyone will lift from Darlington Point as well. It’ll be a very emotional day for us all.”
The game starts at 1.30pm.
