This series of paintings is a powerful and provocative collection of images that captures the emotion of war and epitomizes the spirit of the Gallipoli campaign, a battle that would capture and define much of our nations’ character.
Gallery Coordinator, Raymond Wholohan said we are very lucky to have an artist of Margaret’s calibre to help commemorate the centenary of Australia’s landing at Gallipoli and entering the First World War.
“Margaret has a reputation of not only communicating the essential qualities of the Anzac sprit in painting, but she also approaches the subject with a great sensitivity and understanding,” said Mr Wholohan.
“Australia has a great tradition in depicting its wartime efforts in painting and other visual art, the official war art scheme commissioned by the Australian War Memorial since the onset of the First World War is the prime example.
“Margaret is a contemporary artist who engages with such tradition, and is highly respected for doing so, this is evidenced by her regularly been a finalist in and also winning the Gallipoli Art Prize.”
To further the depth of this exhibition, Margaret will be accompanied by Doctor of Military History and author, Dr Kathryn Spurling, who will be conducting a series of public programs in conjunction with the Art Gallery over the duration of the exhibition.
“Dr Spurling’s knowledge of Australia’s military history is vast; her public lectures that will accompany the exhibition are a must for and military history buffs,” added Mr Wholohan.
“I would like to invite interested community members to attend a free public lecture by Dr Spurling on Thursday April 23 at the Gallery from 2pm titled ‘Artist and Historian’.”
The exhibition will run until 7 June.
That evening the exhibition will officially open at 6pm - all are welcome. For further information, please contact the gallery.
