The oncology unit is located at Griffith Base Hospital.
“The renovation included an additional treatment room, access to a separate toilet, more storage and additional office space,” oncology clinical nurse consultant Margaret Gandy said.
“The treatment room means we no longer have to book a specialist clinic room for our patients to undergo specialised chemotherapy treatment,” she said.
“A toilet within the unit means patients no longer have to use the public toilet. Increased storage provides space for a dedicated, temperature controlled fridge to store chemotherapy and other medications” Ms Gandy said.
“The additional office space also means related services, such as the Social Worker, have a private space to meet with patients”
“The extra space is also used for patients and their families to discuss private issues without interruption” Ms Gandy added.
Patients are noticing the difference the refurbished area makes and have commented to staff about the new look unit.
“The majority of the renovation has been completed using money from the public’s very generous donations to the Oncology clinic” Ms Gandy concluded.
