IT'S that time of the year again when the Griffith Musicians Club opens up nominations for the annual young musician of the year award.
This is the eighth year the competition has been running and the organiser of the award and part of the Griffith Musicians Club, Michael Pfitzner, said the competition was a good opportunity for the young talent in Griffith and surrounding areas to showcase their talent.
“It all kind of started because there were a few musicians who were pretty decent that weren't getting recognition so this was a way to get that to the forefront,” he said.
“What we discovered was that there was a lot more young musicians that even we didn't know about.
“The competition is open to people who were teens in 2014 and it's open to kids from Leeton, Hay and a bunch of surrounding areas, not just Griffith.”
A panel of five will make the final judgement based on criteria such as awards and a recorded performance.
“The nominations for the competition close on Monday, March 30,” Mr Pfitzner said.
“Some things you require is the greatest achievement that you had in 2014, recognised achievements in a calender year, performances you’ve done, awards you’ve received and a recorded performance.”
The competition hopes to give young musicians the confidence the move forward with their craft.
“There have been success stories come out of this competition and not just from the winners,” he said.
“Other nominees who have played at awards nights in the past have then gone on and been asked to play with other bands around town, so the exposure that these musicians can get from the competition is great.
“The aim is to give participants the opportunity to take their craft a bit further.
“Last year we had 24 entrants whereas the first year there was 12.
“It started with humble beginnings and there wasn't an awards night, now there is a big show.”
