The money raised helps fund health prevention programs and create new SunSmart resources.
One of the latest initiatives is the Weather & UV chart, which will be distributed to 300 preschools who renewed their SunSmart childcare membership.
The Weather and UV chart will teach children about the link between UV radiation and sun protection by providing children with a fun and interactive tool.
Griffith East Preschool director Suzy Tucker said the centre had been a member of the SunSmart Program since 2009 and was looking forward to putting the chart into action.
“The program ensures our educators and children are aware of the link between UV radiation and sun protection,” Mrs Tucker said.
“The Weather & UV Chart will certainly support this and we hope it will become a fun daily routine for the 184 children we see each week.”
Community Programs coordinator at Cancer Council NSW Melissa Nixon said the early years of someone's life were the most important in terms of developing skin cancer and that’s why early prevention methods were of the utmost importance.
“Exposure to UV radiation during the first 15 years of life greatly increases the risk of developing skin cancer later in life,” Ms Nixon said.
“Relay for Life is a unique community focused event where people of all ages come together to raise funds and create hope for a cancer free future.
“Our Weather & UV Chart is a way of giving back to the community, by teaching the next generation about the dangers of skin cancer and how they can protect their skin.”
Childcare centres can check their SunSmart membership status and Weather & UV Chart availability by emailing sunsmartchildcare@nswcc.org.au.
