Griffith’s newest roundabout – at the intersection of Beal and Binya streets – will take eight weeks to complete and will be off limits for traffic during that time, council’s director of infrastructure and operations manager Dallas Bibby said.
The intersection, responsible for eight accidents, resulting in five causalities over the past five years, was identified as a “black spot” by the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS).
As a result, Mr Bibby said the new roundabout will be jointly funded by the state Black Spot program and the federal Roads to Recovery program.
“The works will involve widening of the pavement, drainage works, realignment of the kerb and guttering, construction of the concrete roundabout, concrete medians and asphalting,” Mr Bibby said.
“There will be centre lighting on the roundabout to improve visibility.
“A lot of the accidents occurred because early-morning sun was a problem – the roundabout will help to alleviate that.”
During the construction of the roundabout, all the approach roads to the Binya and Beal streets intersection will be closed, with access available to affected residents only within the closed approach roads.
“No traffic will be allowed through,” Mr Bibby said.
“Pedestrians will be unable to enter the intersection during the construction period.
“Detours will be in place and clearly sign posted.
“Council apologises for the inconvenience to local residents and the general public during these works.”
The sections of Binya Street between Burrell Place and Whitton Street, and Beal Street between Noorebar Avenue and Wakaden Street will be closed.
