Notorious for his gigantic vegetables, Mr Farronato’s latest mutant is a 2.5kg radicchio.
The lettuce – weighing two kilograms more than the average – joins a long line of colossal vegetables grown at the Farronato’s Bilbul farm.
Some of the highlights were an 8kg cauliflower, a 13kg sweet potato and a 10kg cabbage.
The ridiculous radicchio was planted in March this year and grew solidly over the four months under Mr Farronato’s tender loving care.
He fed it dutifully with a homemade mix of chicken manure – brewed for weeks in a vat of water to remove the acid – and lawn clippings to coddle the young lettuce into its gloriously gigantic state.
Much to the joy – or horror – of his family, Mr Farronato plans to dole out the bitter lettuce to anyone who wants some.
Veggie lovers since way back, the Farronato family never eat a meal without at least one serve of vegetables.
“We have veggies at least a couple of times a day – lunch and dinners, veggies are on the table,” Mr Farronato said.
“Forever I’ve been growing vegetables, since back in Italy.”
Mr Farronato said the radicchio can be enjoyed cooked or fresh with oil, vinegar, salt and pepper.
