The ingenuity of Griffith man Lindsay Flack earned him a spot on XXXX Island, from where he and mates Brett Crooks, Ben Murphie and Luke Henderson have just returned.
They enjoyed the experience of a lifetime thanks to a barbecue idea Mr Flack submitted as part of the XXXX Gold promotion.
“When they started the competition they asked people to submit ideas about what you’d like on the island,” Mr Flack said.
“I’m a bit of an ideas man and thought, ‘I can win this’. I’d built the Good as Gold Barbie and sent in a picture of it on Facebook. They rang to say mine was a top idea and they wanted to send me and three mates to the island.”
The stay-at-home dad and former army vehicle mechanic said the beauty of the barbecue, which he made from scratch, is that it only takes a few minutes to set up, can toast eight slices of bread, has a hotplate, a spit roast rotisserie and can be powdered using battery, gas, coal or biscuits.
XXXX Island is located 15 kilometres off the coast of Queensland and Mr Flack described the trip as “fantastic”.
“We did a lot of fishing and caught lots of different fish. They put us in the boatshed cabin and Ben ended up winning the best fisherman of all of the groups there,” Mr Flack said.
“It is essentially marketed to blokes, but there were two women on the island when we were there.
“The barbecue is really simple to assemble. I use it all the time when I go out fishing.
“Everything disassembles quickly too and it packs up to be compact, so it travels easy. The legs spin around to become the carry handles. You get 20 hours cooking time with two D cell batteries. They liked the idea that you could go out fishing and when you get back dinner is done.”
Some of the other winning ideas submitted include toilets with a view, fully equipped floating recliners and a beer butler.
