A FIGHTING half- century from boom youngster Connor Matheson was not enough for the Griffith Under 18s to break their winless Creet Cup streak against West Wyalong on Sunday.

Matheson entered the fray with his side 2-34 after the early losses of openers Michael McWhirter (four) and Daniel Peruzzi (17) and immediately got to work. He forged a quick 24-run stand with Fletcher Josling, but the latter was removed for just nine runs and his replacement, Jake Breed, was clean-bowled on the very next ball for a golden duck.
But in Tom West, Matheson found the sidekick he needed to lift Griffith's young guns back into the game.
The pair piled on 69 runs for the sixth wicket, lasting nearly 15 overs together until Matheson finally holed out on 56.
His innings included eight boundaries and he scored at nearly a run a ball.
West tried his best to carry the innings without Matheson, smacking five fours, but he fell for 38 as Griffith's last five wickets went for just 19 runs.
However, a strong top-order performance from West Wyalong meant the home side had no trouble getting to the 160 runs needed for the win, and did so with three wickets to spare.
