The council elected to cancel the ceremony and other Australia Day events at an extraordinary meeting last night due to fears around the Omicron outbreak and the risks related to large events.
"The number one priority is always public safety and Council last night resolved that large events such as these present too much of a risk with the current impacts of COVID-19," said general manager John Scarce.
"A key part of the day is the ceremony to recognise the recipients of Australia Day awards and these special people in our community will now be recognised on our Facebook and Instagram pages and through the local media."
The traditional visit from the Australia Day ambassador has also been changed, but not yet cancelled. It's currently planned to have this year's ambassador Viv Kartsounis make an address online, discussing her life and charity work.
Ms Kartsounis founded Shoes for Planet Earth, a charity providing running shoes for those in need. The charity has since provided over 80,000 people with pairs of shoes.
A spokesperson for Murrumbidgee Council said that the fireworks they often display for Australia Day will likely be launched later in the year.

Mr Scarce empathised with the disappointment some will be feeling at the news, particularly organisers who have worked hard to find their time and effort lost at the last minute.
"We are looking forward to holding events in the future when it is safe to do so and we can ensure the health and safety of those wishing to attend and all staff and volunteers who are involved.
"Your commitment to bringing events such as these to our towns is much appreciated and it is unfortunate that COVID-19 continues to impact our lives to such a degree," he said.
Summer Break events at the Coleambally and Jerilderie swimming pools have also been postponed and will be held at a later date.
