The Bureau of Meteorology issued the warning at 7.45am on Thursday, January 6, which came as little surprise to residents who have already experience both thunderstorms and rain throughout the early hours of the day and overnight.
Tropical moisture extending south from the Coral Sea will combine with an upper trough to produce severe thunderstorm activity today.
Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours.
Locations which may be affected include Cooma, Wagga Wagga, Young, Griffith, Narrandera, Leeton and Darlington Point.
The bureau is predicting a 90 per cent chance of 20 to 40 millimetres of rain falling in Leeton today, with a temperature of 30 degrees, meaning residents are in for a muggy day.

In Griffith, the predictions for the day are similar, but one degree hotter at 31.
More rain in expected across the MIA tomorrow, with a 90 per cent chance of 10 to 20mm in Griffith and the same in Leeton, with a high of 27 degrees at the latter.
The State Emergency Service advises people should:
- Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
- Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
- If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
- Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks.
- After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides.
- Unplug computers and appliances.
- Avoid using the phone during the storm.
- Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
- Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
