The turf was laid using money originally set aside for the Griffith Sikh Games, that were unfortunately cancelled due to COVID-19 earlier this year. It was the second time the games were cancelled, and when the Sikh community applied to extend the grant for another year, they were declined.
Being told that they had to spend the money this year, they devoted it to installing new irrigation and laying turf around the grounds to give young people an area to play in.
Narinder Sandhu, who helped organise the plan, said that the land wasn't being used and they wanted to find a purpose for it.
"This whole area wasn't being utilised," he said.
"We still need to spend more to finish the fields off, we only got the turf a few weeks ago. Laid it all in one day, took 12 hours and four forklifts going flat out," he added.
Ms Ley visited the temple in the afternoon to survey the grounds. She said it was good to see the community thinking about the future.

"I like to see what's available for the next generation. When I look at it, I very much see the children so I want to congratulate the Sikh community for what they're doing here," she said.
Mr Sandhu said that there was a long way to go and more developments planned.
"We want to fence it off, so that's another 15 to 20 grand ... If we want to put swings and playground equipment, that's more. We want some soccer goalposts ... We're looking at another $30,000 for all of it," he explained.
Ms Ley encouraged them to look into state grants.
"There's a range of grants that the government offers, I'm encouraging the community to consider state grants as well. Community grants are great, it means you can fit the project to whatever the community wants."
