Council resolved at the October 26 council meeting to pledge $2.03 million to the redevelopment of Kooyoo Street. As part of the Community Infrastructure fund, each local government authority has been allocated general grant funding for community projects, with the caveat that the money must be spent on projects accessible to the majority of the public.

This caveat is what left an organisation behind in July this year, after councillors were informed at a workshop that an organisation had expressed an interest in securing funding to upgrade their facility under this program. Staff concluded that the facility was not eligible, as it was not accessible to the general public.
At Tuesday's council meeting, council unanimously voted in favour of spending the money on Kooyoo Street. While the Federal government has not yet announced grant funding guidelines, councils have been advised that money can be spent from January.
Council was successful in obtaining $1 million in funding through the NSW State Government's 'Your High Street Grant Program' earlier this year, partly funding stage 1 of the redevelopment however the project was not fully funded. This extra 2 million will fully fund stage 1.
Stage 1 of the project will encompass works from Banna Avenue to Banna Lane, with stage 2 covering Banna Lane to Yambil Street.

Mayor John Dal Broi explained the program.
"Council saw this funding as an opportunity to provide external funding toward the Kooyoo Street Redevelopment, at no cost to the rate payers," he explained.
"The proposal would see the precinct redeveloped to see Kooyoo Street become more pedestrian-centric, which will improve liveability, health outcomes, social cohesion, and economic activity," Councillor Dal Broi said.
