The tests can deliver a result within 15 minutes, dramatically cutting down on the time needed to wait for a result in isolation from standard PCR COVID-19 tests.

Much like the common PCR test, the rapid antigen test sees an individual collect a sample by swabbing their throat and nose.

The swabs then get place into a chemical solution and are placed on a reactive strip of paper which will display a result.

Blooms the Chemist Pharmacist, Abhijit Jhosh, told The Area News that he expected the rapid antigen tests to 'fly off the shelves' when they came into stock.

"Lots of people will appreciate being able to test from home and get such a fast result," Mr Jhosh said.

"Especially as people begin to start travelling again, the tests will become a must have item for many."

Rapid antigen tests are already used widely in a number of other countries such as the United States.

Amcal Pharmacy Head Chemist Pat Zirilli said whilst there were many advantages of the rapid antigen tests, they shouldn't be relied upon.

"These tests provide you a quick and easy result but aren't as accurate," Mr Zirilli said.

"Make sure that if you have been exposed to COVID-19 or have any cold or flu like symptoms you still go get a PCR test to be extra safe in addition to the rapid antigen test."

When speaking with ABC Radio Melbourne, the Burnet Institute's David Anderson said the rapid tests were not a silver bullet against the pandemic.

"Even if you do the test properly it will miss people and it can give a false sense of security," Mr Anderson said.

"You feel sick, but you do a rapid antigen test but you don't swab your nose properly and you think everything is fine until you go about your daily business and expose lots of other people."

It is believed the kits will be available in packs of two to five with an estimated price point of between $10 and $30.
