Whilst the official handover was only recently, Mr Mortlock has been training up Mr Laidler every since he put his hand up for the top job last year.
"I have always said that if there was a younger person will to do my job I would train them and impart what knowledge and skills I have," Mr Mortlock said.
"It is up to Tim now to take the next steps," Mr Mortlock said.
Mr Laidler said he was keen to put his own unique stamp on things, but hoped to embody much of what Mr Mortlock had as leader of the unit.
In recent years Griffith's SES unit has also received some of the latest high-tech equipment that volunteers can call on.
"Steve has helped tremendously over the years to bring up out assets and I want to continue that," Mr Laidler said.

"Our biggest asset is passionate people who are keen and eager to get involved.
"There is a place for everyone at the SES no matter your ability or interest."
And whilst it may be a daunting few years ahead, there is plenty to look forward too.
"I have big shoes to fill but I am looking forward to continue growing the unit," Mr Laidler said.
"If our unit can accurately reflect the demographic of our community then we can grow in plenty of other ways as well.
"Everyone brings something different and we become stronger as a whole."
In the months to come, Mr Mortlock will be staying on as a member and advisor the remainder of the Griffith crew.
"What is a weakness to me, will be a strength for him," Mr Mortlock said.
"I am confident he will do a fantastic job."
The unit is always looking for new volunteers. For more information and to join the unit please visit them on Facebook.
