On Monday, officers from Australian Border Force intercepted a consignment of sewing thread that arrived in Sydney from Kazakhstan, destined for an address in Griffith.

A statement from police said that 9.7kg of methylamphetamine and almost 2.1kg of heroin was found concealed in the batches.

The prohibited substances found represent a combined estimated street value of $9.73 million.

Following an investigation, police attended a rural property on Murrumbidgee Avenue, Hanwood about 2.30pm on Thursday.

Two men, aged 27 and 40, allegedly ran from police but were arrested a short distance away.

NSW Police said that during a search of the property, officers seized items relating to prohibited drugs, as well as a semi-automatic shotgun.

Matiullah Shirzad, 40, appeared at Griffith Local Court on Friday charged with two counts of attempting to possess a large commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported border controlled drug - serious indictable offence, and possessing an unauthorised prohibited firearm.

Ritesh Mukeshbai Bhavsar, 27, appeared at the same court accused of two counts of attempting to possess a large commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported border-controlled drug - serious indictable offence.

Neither of the men made an application for bail at court and will remain in custody.

Mr Bhavsar's matter is due to return to Griffith Local Court on October 20, while Mr Shirzad's case will appear at the same court on November 2.
