Although COVID-19 has put limits on services and such matters, the Multicultural Council has continued to help those that need help, such as visa, housing, interpreting and general issues that arise constantly.

One of the good news stories is that sections our local Indian community has donated a lot of foodstuffs that can be put to good use for those in need during this difficult time. Huge gratitude to this community.
No matter where you work or what your goals are, everyone benefits from communicating more effectively.
This was a topic of discussion at the recent Multicultural NSW regional zoom meeting through the advisory committee. The poor and conflicting communication that the community was constantly bombarded with, regarding COVID-19, was a trigger for poor understanding which in turn has a significant impact on mental health and wellbeing and left so many struggling with stress, sadness, anxiety and many more emotions and experiences.
Poor communication also pointed to the Department of Health webpage which portrayed a lot of information for the public, however, difficult to navigate and a better design of the page, would go a long way for people to access relevant information at a less stressful timeframe. The participants of the zoom meeting are hopeful that these points of issues discussed will find a solution for the better.
Since housing has been such a 'hot topic', it will be good to know that the regional housing taskforce consultation that took place recently have published the key issues discussed at the recent zoom meeting, however, it will be of interest how much action comes out of this consultation and from the issues raised. Points published from the consultation are:
- Greater prioritisation on the coordination and delivery of infrastructure to support new homes;
- A need for collaboration between all levels of Government, the housing development industry and the community to develop the right type of housing where people need it;
- Calls to speed up planning processes and reduce duplication, particularly where opportunities to provide housing are time-critical; and
- Demand for more affordable and diverse housing in line with changing demographics, jobs growth, natural disasters, and migration trends.
