The land informally known as Ortella Park is searching for a new name, after Griffith City Council noticed that the land is not formally named and is simply referred to based on it's location on Ortella Avenue.
At Tuesday night's council meeting, it was resolved that the park should be renamed although discussion was held around how.
While initially recommended that council simply choose a name from the Road and Park Name Register's Priority List and be done with it, they elected to go to the community for suggestions.
While the list provides guidelines, Councillor Simon Croce had particular thoughts on who could be honoured.
"I'd like to see someone who wasn't gifted land, but bought it in those early days. That takes guts," he said.
Councillor Rina Mercuri had a different tack and suggested not naming the park after a person at all.
"Maybe the Wiradjuri people have a name or a word for that juncture?" she asked.
"It would be good to include them."
The community is asked to nominate people who were important to the immediate area surrounding the park, from Ortella Street to Gordon Avenue.
While submissions will be open, approval will need to be granted by the Geographic Names Board before the park can be renamed.
