The organisers of the Festa delle Salsicce have advised the salami-making tournament will not be going ahead due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The news is disappointing for the region's avid salami makers, many of whom felt they had the cream of the crop this year.

"We were looking forward to a really close competition with a lot of people telling us their salami's this year had come out really good," event organiser Nigel Ippoliti said.

"It was a good cold winter which helped the salami's not curing too quickly and we talked to a lot of people who said they were going to be up in the top honours."

The cancellation comes four months after the Salami Festival was also called off and the organisers had been hoping the homemade salami competition would help keep the celebration alive.

Event organiser Roy Catanzariti said it was a difficult call to make but ultimately an unavoidable one.

"We were really hoping to at least still have the homemade salami competition but it got to a stage when even the judging would have to be restricted and it just wasn't worth having," he said.

"For the judging you've got the 24 judges, the scorers, the helpers and people who come to watch so eventually we just weren't in a position to hold it."

Mr Catanzariti said it was "very frustrating" to make the call, especially with people from all over Australia still calling up and asking about tickets.

Before being cancelled this year's Salami Festival was gearing up to be the biggest yet and Mr Catanzariti said he was expecting a festival to remember next year if it is allowed to go ahead.

The competition joins a slew of other local events cancelled due to the ongoing outbreak including the Italian Festival, the Griffith Cup and a Taste of Italy.
