Casella Family Brands has announced it will support a $30,000 scholarship for a Charles Sturt University PhD student at the National Wine and Grape Industry Centre (NWGIC) in Wagga.

The scholarship will go towards three years of the student's PhD research and will also include offering the student their own office and a placement at the Casella headquarters in Yenda.

Managing director John Casella said he hopes the donation will help support the successful applicant on their journey into the winemaking industry.

"As a graduate of Charles Sturt University myself, I understand the many pressures students can feel during their studies," Mr Casella said.

"This prestigious scholarship has been designed to help alleviate some of the financial concerns students may face so they can focus on achieving exceptional results."

The wine boss said he hoped providing that support would help ensure the Australian wine industry stays strong into the future.

"I'm proud to support the development of the next generation of talent in the Australian wine industry and believe studying is an ideal means to ensuring the industry remains resilient and future focused," he said.

Professor Leigh Schmidtke is the director of the NWGIC and said the scholarship would help drive new research for the wine science sector.

"Charles Sturt University research is focused on developing solutions for real-world problems and this is another example of how we work closely with industry to achieve innovation," Professor Schmidtke said.

The director said generosity from local industry leaders like Casella Family Brands would help raise the level of research in the Australian wine sector into the future.

The recipient of the scholarship will be chosen through a competitive process. Only NWGIC students who are beginning their PhD next year may apply.
