The Year 11 students were taught how to code using an Arduino Microcontroller and C++ language which they used to control Pitsco Robotics by Deputy Principal of the Virtual STEM Academy Ian Preston, who is one of only a handful of Pitsco Robotics Certified Educations in the world.
"Students learnt the syntax of the Arduino IDE and undertook a number of coding challenges that involved sequence, selection and repetition constructs" Mr Preston said.
"One of the challenges was the program the Arduino UNO microcontroller to turn on a light when the light level in the room dropped below a certain value."
From there, students were introduced to the Pitsco Robotics platform that incorporates the Arduino IDE to code and control robots.
According to Mr Preston, MRHS students have been very interested in coding and robotics, with some students even competing in state and national and previously even international competitions on a regular basis.

"We have two robotics teams on junior and senior levels and by learning how to use Pitsco and Arduino Microcontrollers in class, our students can transfer these skills onto our robotics teams which have had some outstanding results in previous competitions" Mr Preston said.
"Participating in the robotics teams at MRHS enables students to develop their skills in collaborations, engineering, programming, 3D modelling and printing, video production and presentation skills."
MRHS is also the base of the Murrumbidgee Academy of STEM Excellence (MASE) with approximately 20 schools in a hub and spoke model with a focus on Agri-Tech, Advanced Manufacturing and the Virtual STEM Academy whose inaugural class begun their STEM learning just weeks ago.
"Building student and teacher STEM capacity is a major focus for the MASE" Mr Preston said.
"A dedicated STEM Maker Space has also been provided by Murrumbidgee Regional High School equipped with a wide range of STEM resources."
