The 2021 theme for NAIDOC week is 'Heal the Country' and saw students participate in a range of activities aimed at celebrating the rich cultural heritage and connection to country for Australia's First Nations people.

According to NAIDOC, Heal the Country "calls for stronger measures to recognise, protect, and maintain all aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage".

Celebrations began with a special morning tea in the library for Koori families, with Bronwyn Murray from Murrumbidgee Regional High School (MRHS) and Auntie Carolyn Williams working alongside Aboriginal students to develop art works on canvas.

According to Assistant Principal, Lisa Turner the students were taught unique art skills and developed a story, which was represented in these art works.

"The classrooms have also been a hive of activity, cooking Johnny Cakes, learning songs in Wiradjuri language and writing stories using Aboriginal symbols," Mrs Turner said.

The week culminated with a special NAIDOC week assembly which saw the MRHS Aboriginal girls dance group perform and student Zavian Williams impress the school community with his didgeridoo playing skills.

Students then got to enjoy a NAIDOC themed disco.
