Ronaldo converted two penalties on Wednesday to help the reigning champions secure a 2-2 draw with France and a spot in the round of 16 at the European Championship.

They increased his total with the national team to 109 goals, tied for the all-time men's record with retired Iran striker Ali Daei.

Among the first to congratulate Ronaldo was Daei who said on Instagram: "I am honoured that this remarkable achievement will belong to Ronaldo - great champion of football and caring humanist who inspires and impacts lives throughout the world."

Ronaldo can take sole possession of the record in the last 16 game against Belgium on Sunday in his 179th international.

The Portugal great's Euro 2020-leading fourth and fifth goals also extended his overall tournament record to 14.

His combined tally of 21 goals at the World Cup and Euros is also a record - two more than Germany's Miroslav Klose.

Ronaldo scored his opening goal in the 31st minute after France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris misread a free kick and instead struck Danilo in the face.

He then equalised from the spot in the 60th, when his cross from the left made contact with the hand of Jules Kounde.

The 36-year-old Ronaldo's historic run began 17 years ago when he scored his first goal for Portugal in a 2-1 loss to Greece during the group stage at Euro 2004.

Wednesday's Group F draw with Les Blues was Ronaldo's record-setting 59th Euros game, including qualifiers, which is one more than former Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

He also has the most matches at Euro finals with 24 and is the only player to have played at five Euros, making his debut in 2004.
