A herd of 40 goats that went missing from a farmer's paddock more than three weeks ago have returned - just as mysteriously as they first left.

On May 26, the owner of a Benerembah property was left perplexed when he arrived to find his 40 boer goats had disappeared from his farm without a trace.
The farmer searched nearby properties and called for help on social media but wasn't able to track down the herd, which was worth about $6000 in total.

According to police, the farmer noticed the gate to the paddock had been opened in a different way to how he did it.
Police also noted that the herds' footprints did not begin until inside the paddock, suggesting they had been transported back there by a vehicle.
Police remain unsure about exactly what happened with the disappearance, but no further investigations will be taking place.
The farmer told officers he appreciated having his goats back.
