Fletcher had to play hard against some very tough opponents, beating out seeded players such as Paul Howe and Charlie Snow.

His final match-up against Jade Culph proved formidable and fast-paced, but Fletcher said that he just had a lucky streak. Culph was seeded at number 2 for the tournament, just behind Paul Howe.

"I probably just got away from him early, and you know, today was just my day. He's a good competitor and he has been for a lot of years so it was good to finally play against him."

Fletcher has been playing tennis for around 35 years, but this was his first MIA Open. He said his semi-final against local favourite Danny Dossetor was particularly tough and he was 'lucky to get through it.'

He brought his three kids along to the tournament as well, and spoke very highly of the family-friendly nature of the tournament.

Having now won the open men's singles, Fletcher will receive $700 in prize money from sponsor SunRice. Culph as the runner-up will take a second prize of $350.
