A Griffith councillor is calling for a "dangerous and unpredictable" bridge on a major local road to be improved as soon as possible.

Just ten minutes down the road from Dino Zappacosta's Hanwood village store, drivers traversing Willbriggie crossing are regularly having their lives put at risk by the poor condition of the bridge, the councillor says.

According to Councillor Zappacosta, the "awkward" camber and curve on the Kidman Way crossing regularly surprises unsuspecting drivers, causing them to swerve dangerously and even cross the double-white lines down the centre of the road.

"When I'm working in the store people regularly come in and tell me about an incident they've just had at the crossing and to my knowledge there have been numerous accidents over the years," he said.

"The Willbriggie bridge is a death trap. Something must be done before there is a nasty accident."

More than ten years ago, the Roads and Traffic Authority stated that the crossing required a realignment, but significant works are yet to take place.

Over the past few years, Griffith City Council has identified a number of issues with the crossing and has liaised with Transport for NSW about potential works.

Council's director of infrastucture and operations Phil King said he has been advised Transport for NSW is working on a concept plan to fund works on the bridge which will likely include realignment, widening and pavement upgrade.

There is no clear date on these works and Cr Zappacosta says it is crucial they take place before tragedy strikes.

"It's paramount that the works be done virtually as soon as possible," Cr Zappacosta said.

"Statistics is what moved a politician but I don't think we can wait for a death for the politicians to move."

The Griffith councillor called on Member for Murray Helen Dalton to help in the push for repairs to the road.
