Mr Glyde said the Basin covered over one million square kilometres.

"This is us trying to lift our game, to reach out to people," Mr Glyde said.

"One of the things I get to do as the chief executive is to travel the length and breadth of the basin.

"Very few people have that opportunity to see what it's like in St George and also what it's like in Goolwa and in between."

Mr Glyde said the conference was about bringing people from up and down the basin together to share and learn.

"It was this very city in which the guide to the Plan was burned, but I think the solution to this is the provision of information and trying to develop trust, not just trust between government agencies and stakeholders, but trust within the community."

Mr Glyde said he didn't want to see Basin communities fighting each other over the use of water.

"One of the things that is fundamental to sharing a finite resource is trust, that someone isn't getting more than they're entitled to, and so the investment that the Commonwealth Government is made and the state governments are making in improving metering and measuring is really welcome by the MDBA," Mr Glyde said.

"We think with that knowledge and that information trust can develop and people can be more confident in the future.

"I think you have to reflect the fact that the measurement and metering of water in the south has been going on ever since irrigation started.

"It's relatively recently, in the last 30 or 40 years that there's been taking of water in the northern part of the basin so they're catching up and this investment will help them catch up quicker."
