The construction of dog kennels and a cattery at the shelter means women will now be able to bring their companion animals with them while moving into the refuge.

The Linking Communties Network was awarded a $40,000 grant from the NSW Government to build the animal housing facilities, which will be constructed later this month.

Deputy CEO of the network Kirrily Salvestro says the initiative will help make women more willing to leave dangerous situations.

"Over the years we've had heaps of women who are victims of domestic violence who refuse to leave because they don't want to leave their beloved pets behind," Mrs Salvestro said.

"Being able to bring that pet with them and make sure that it is safe will hopefully bring them a lot of comfort."

According to Mrs Salvestro, the initiative is also being supported by local veterinarians who have offered to immunise the animals and the Griffith Soroptimist group who have offered to supply food.

The grant will go towards two dog kennels and two cat kennels at the refuge, with some of the money also being saved to fund potential agistment.

The animals will remain in the kennels throughout the day, but women will have the option to take them for walks and to the dog park.

As well as making the transition into the refuge easier, having the animals around will also be vital mental support for the women and children in the shelter, Mrs Salvestro said.

"Studies show that animals are great companions and for people suffering trauma that's often the only comfort they have," she said.

"We think having the pets here will be a great bonus for both us and the clients."

She added while the focus right now is cats and dogs, other animals such as chickens, rabbits and birds could potentially be kept in the kennels.
