According to Cell Care, Australia's largest and most experienced cord blood and tissue bank, cord blood is the blood that remains in a baby's umbilical cord and placenta after a baby is more and the umbilical cord has been clamped and then cut.

Continued research into cord blood stem cell transfusions will see such transfusions become a more potent alternative to bone marrow transplants for patients diagnosed with life threatening conditions such as blood cancers, immune disorders and metabolic disorders.

Gerry Rohan, President of the Inner Wheel Club of Yenda said that all proceeds raised from the mothers day raffle will go directly towards funding further research and scientific innovation into the benefits and usability of cord blood.

"Our fundraising efforts are part of a national Inner Wheel Australia Campaign and support researchers in using cord blood to find cures for the treatment of leukemia, strokes, heart disease and other autoimmune diseases such as Cystic Fibrosis," Mrs Rohan said.

Members of Yenda's Inner Wheel Club will be selling tickets to the public outside John Dodd Pharmacy on Banna Avenue from 9am to 3pm on Thursday May 6 and Friday May 7.

The raffle will be drawn on Saturday at the opening of a new recreation room at Yenda Retirement Village, which the Inner Wheel Club raised funds to build.
