The Griffith Sailing Club is coming up on six months of not being allowed to set sail on Lake Wyangan, but loyalty and dedication to the sport has kept the club afloat - and now they're eyeing a return.

Club secretary David Martin says despite the red alert banning sailing at Lake Wyangan for most of the past year, club members have shown their commitment by continuing to pay their membership fees.

"We've maintained a reasonable number of members in terms of people signing up again," he said. "We definitely haven't gone forwards, but we haven't gone backwards either."

"We're like any not-for-profit organisation, if we fell over and ceased to exist we'd probably never come back. So I think there was a commitment from members to ensure we go beyond where we are at the moment."

For the past year, Lake Wyangan has been regularly off-limits to the sailors due to high levels of blue-green algae.

But efforts are being made to improve the water quality and last month Griffith City Council approved the addition of 2700 megalitres of water to fill the lake for the first time since 2016.

Mr Martin said the club is confident this additional water will improve the water quality enough to downgrade the warning and allow the club to host its annual Laurie Meline memorial regatta.

The regatta has been lined up for the first weekend of June, and Mr Martin says the city's sailors are all pretty keen for a return to the sport they love.

"The mood is pretty positive," he said. "Hopefully we've turned a corner water quality-wise and we're entering a period where there isn't going to be prolonged red alerts."

The club has used the last six months to conduct some maintenance, including making improvements to the foreshore wall and installing water tanks.

While some of the clubs' members have travelled across Australia to compete in regattas, Mr Martin says the return of sailing on Lake Wyangan would help bring social sailors back into the fold.
