The temperature dropped down to minus 0.1 degrees at Griffith Airport at about 6:05am.

The Bureau of Meteorology has been recording temperatures in Griffith for over 48 years, and this morning was the coldest temperature the bureau ever recorded in April.

The previous record holder was a chilly 0 degree morning on April 23 in 2006.

Other parts of the region also slept through record-breaking temperatures, with Leeton and Yanco hitting a record April low of 2.8 degrees.

Leeton and Yanco's previous coldest ever April temperature was a 3 degree morning on April 22 in 2006.

BoM meteorologist Helen Reid said the cold snap was brought on by a large high pressure system currently hovering over the region.

"We're under the influence of a high pressure system which means the air is very stable," she said. "There are no clouds either so the air is able to cool significantly overnight."

"There's not much winds to keep air moving and mixing, which means down near the ground it gets very cold."

Ms Reid said while it would continue to be chilly for the rest of the month, it was unlikely that there would be any temperatures as cold as this morning any time soon.

She said the Bureau of Meteorology would need to confirm that the instrumentation was all working correctly before the temperatures could officially be put in the record books.
