Street Scapes is aiming to activate unused parts of town by turning Kooyoo Street into a 'pedestrian piazza', with new events popping up on the street every few days in May.

Park-style seating will be set up across the street and a container kiosk will operate as a pop-up cafe for local businesses.

Over the course of the month, a team of projectionists will light up the side of the Westpac building with artwork, and events such as hula hooping workshops, dance classes, community art projects, and markets will take place in the plaza.

Event coordinator Nathan Beer says he is excited to showcase the potential of Griffith's underutilised areas.

"We're looking at parts of the city which don't seem as activated as they should be, like Kooyoo Street and Banna Lane, and we're looking to transform them and really get people going there," Mr Beer said.

"We have these amazing laneways which people don't really use, and hopefully this event will change that."

Mr Beer said he believed the highlight of the event would be the projections, turning what would usually be a normal brick facade into the temporary canvas for stunning works of art.

"Our biggest thing is definitely the projections which will run over the course of the month," he said.

"We're working with artists who have contributed to Vivid Festival in Sydney and they're going to be transforming our city for a month into an artist-topia."

Street Scapes has also joined forces with the Banna Lane Festival, which will see four brand new works of art painted onto walls down the laneway.

The two events will come together on May 8 for the Lighting up the Laneway party, where residents are invited to walk down Banna Lane and check out the new murals, before arriving in Kooyoo Street where the projections will be turned on for the first time.

The project is organised by Griffith City Council, and Mr Beer said he hopes it will pave the way to more pedestrian-focused development across the city.

"We really want to see how well this street activation is received by the community."

"Then we can go on and do future redevelopments and perhaps change parts of the city to focus more on pedestrians."

Street Scapes Griffith will begin on May 3 and run until May 30, a full list of events is available on the event website.
