The usually empty back street will once again be thronging with activity when the Banna Lane Festival gets underway in May.

Four experienced artists will spend the week leading up to May 3 working on new large-scale art murals, adding on to the incredible work unveiled at the 2019 festival.

Once the artwork is complete, members of the Griffith community are invited to attend art talks, tours, and youth programs in the alleyway throughout the week.

The murals will be lit up for a few hours each night, but Banna Lane is expected to truly come alive during the Lighting up the Laneway party on May 8.

The laneway party will be a celebration of the new artwork, complete with live music, food, drinks, and activities for the kids spread across Banna Lane and Kooyoo Street.

Festival creator and organiser Carrah Lymer said she is excited to bring the event back, especially after its success in 2019.

"After having to postpone last year, we're so excited that we can start bringing walls to life in the laneway again," Ms Lymer said.

"Last time went really well. I think at first people didn't get it, they thought the art was going to be tagging or graffiti, but once they saw it they were blown away."

The four artists set to unleash their creativity within the laneway are George Rose, Reubszz, MAN.De and local artist Allan McKenzie Senior.

According to Ms Lymer, there was interest from across the globe in the project.

"We put out an artist expression of interest on our website and we had applicants from all over the world," she said.

"From Africa, Argentina, the United States ... people internationally are seeing what we're doing here in Griffith and they want to be a part of it."

This year's Banna Lane Festival is a part of the larger Street Scapes celebration organised by Griffith City Council.

Street Scapes event coordinator Nathan Beer said working together with the Banna Lane Festival would help them achieve their goal of transforming the underutilised areas of Griffith.

"We want to change people's perceptions of what streets and laneways can be, they can be more of a pedestrian-centric zone, and this is a great combination," Mr Beer said.

"What Carrah has done for the city is just phenomenal and we'd love to build that up and make it as big as possible."

The Banna Lane Festival will kick off on May 3 and the Lighting up the Laneway party will be on May 8.
