However, one passionate Murrumbidgee woman wants to see Griffith adults shed their inhibitions and challenge themselves to a new skill all while having some confidence-boosting, silly fun.

According to Emma Cantrill, nursery worker by day, performer, teacher and circus enthusiast by night, hula hooping is making a well-deserved resurgence as a fitness and well being activity for adults.

"Hula hooping nowadays has been taken on by a lot of adults. We do it for fitness, for fun and it's almost like a form of meditation," Miss Cantrill said.

"The repetitive movements give almost a meditative vibe.

"Challenging yourself to learn something new, and once you finally get it, that feeling of success is a huge part of why people are taking it on."

Miss Cantrill is hosting an absolute beginners hula hooping class at Griffith Aquatic Centre, Sunday March 14 and she encourages everyone to try it out.

"You get a lot out of learning hula hooping. Improved core strength, improved balance and co-ordination and as you learn different types of moves it can be used as a full-body workout," she said.

"So many endorphins are released when you do it. You get this happy rush.

"You get a big confidence boost out of being willing to be silly and nailing something that in the beginning you couldn't do. So every time you achieve something new you get that confidence boost."

Miss Cantrill took up hula hooping in 2014 when her lifestyle of working shift work meant she wasn't getting an outlet to balance her well being.

"I came across hula hooping online and thought it looked really cool," she said.

"The girl doing it looked really happy and free and she was dancing and twirling and I thought 'yep I'm going to try that'.

"So I got myself a hoop and I went on Youtube and spent all my free time practising and learning from videos just in my backyard and it turned into a proper passion."

She now performs and teaches circus skills such as hula hooping, poi and is dabbling in some juggling as well.
