For the past five weeks, eight new recruits have been learning the ropes with the Griffith SES crew.

Despite only being at the start of a 12 month process, the group has already been taught vital lessons such as flood rescue and transporting an injured person into an ambulance.

Brendon Green, one of the recruits, says the experience so far has been tough but rewarding.

"Yeah it's been fabulous," Mr Green said. "We've been learning heaps and the guys are great. It's a really tight-knit group, like a family."

"I was lucky enough to go out on a job with a few of them. It was definitely full on but well worth it."

For Mr Green, joining the SES has been a goal since they saved his life two years ago.

"I was on a work truck, broke 43 bones and carked it three times," he said. "The first people on the scene were these guys and they saved my life."

"If it wasn't for the SES I wouldn't be kicking, so I thought I could give a little bit back to the community and join up once I'd recovered."

According to Deputy Unit Commander Tim Laidler, Mr Green and the other recruits have hit the ground running so far.

"They've put in a lot of effort and they've done really well," Mr Laidler said.

As well as the team of recruits who have just started, another group of 12 recruits who started last year are expected to finish their training later this month.

The unit currently has nine registered members, but Mr Laidler says a town the size of Griffith would ideally have "about 50".

"Having another eight or nine people join is going to be immensely helpful," he said. "It will mean the people who have been doing it for years will have a chance to have a bit of a break."

Mr Laidler says the unit is always on the lookout for people who are genuine, honest, and who have an eagerness to learn.
