The pedestrian and cyclist bridge will connect Noorla and Kywong Streets, offering residents a safer alternative to walking along the Merrigal Street bridge, which has no safe space for those not in vehicles.
The bridge is being built in anticipation of increased pedestrian traffic in the area, as a result of the Westend Stadium and Jubilee Oval developments.
Construction of the bridge is expected to be completed by June 30 this year.
Griffith mayor John Dal Broi said the bridge would make the area safer for pedestrians.
"Connection from our sporting facilities will be increasingly important with the redevelopments, and providing safe commuter access is paramount," said Councillor Dal Broi.
"Additionally, the bridge will also provide a safer passage to the CBD for residents in West Griffith."

Construction of the carpark will take place from 7am to 5pm from Monday to Friday, though some work may occasionally take place on weekends.
Council's director of infrastructure and operations Phil King said the construction will be undertaken by local contractors who will manufacture and install the bridge.
"So far, the works involved include clearing of minor vegetation and the remaining works will be footing installation, bridge installation, approaches and minor concrete works," Mr King said.
