Soil beneath the road will now be replaced with "more suitable material" and subsoil drainage will be installed along both sides of the street.
Griffith City Council announced the amendments to the project last week and in a statement Mayor John Dal Broi admitted there would have to be delays.
"It is extremely unfortunate and we do feel for for the businesses affected, but this is something that is beyond our control," Councillor Dal Broi said.
"Yambil Street has certainly presented many unexpected challenges, this is just another that we have to deal with."
Council did not announce how long the delays would be.
Construction on stage three of the Yambil Street upgrade project began in December 2020, which has seen the northern side of Yambil street between Kookora and Ulong streets blocked off.
Businesses had previously expressed frustration at being cut off from the road right before Christmas, and these delays have added to the frustrations.
The owner of Inspirations Paint, Chris Sergi, said there has been "no communication" from council about delays.
"It would have been nice to have been told when they found out, being a business owner on the street," Mr Sergi said.
"My business has dropped completely ... the longer the street is shut the longer I suffer."
"There was no communication ... surely I don't have to read on Facebook to find out what council are doing on my street."
Another owner of a Yambil Street business also expressed their frustrations to The Area News but asked that their comments not be published.
