Griffith City Council adopted the master plan for the Lake Wyangan urban release area at this month's first council meeting.
The plan will drive development in the Lake Wyangan area with the creation of 1200 residential lots.
Each of the lots will range in size from 700 to 2000 square metres.
It also includes space for "green corridors" and park space, a cycle and footpath network, and commercial lots.
The master plan also details information on staging, servicing and drainage requirements, road networks, and land uses.
In a statement, Mayor John Dal Broi welcomed the adoption of the plan.
"This is exciting for our community because it opens up a new growth area, which is something we are in need of," Councillor Dal Broi said.
"It's going to offer further housing options in the future."
According to council, the plan is in line with the recommendations of the Griffith Housing Strategy adopted in 2019, which projected 1,744 additional dwellings would be required by 2036 to house the city's growing population.
Council is now working on preparing detailed engineering plans for roads and drainage systems, after which people will be able to apply to develop on the lots.
No date was given on when this would be.
It's going to offer further housing options in the future.

The master plan was on public exhibition from November 20 to December 18, during which time five written submissions were received.
These submissions expressed concerns over the environmental impact of the project and various road alignments.
Council reviewed the submissions but no amendments to the master plan were made.

Speaking to The Area News last year, Cr Dal Broi said the area could become "the next major suburb of Griffith".
"I believe they will have more access to more services there," he said.
"If you look at the distance from Collina to major services, Lake Wyangan is closer ... I'm predicting it will be the next place to go for building a home."
The full development plan is available on the council website.
