With a heat wave coming to the MIA this weekend, authorities are urging anyone looking to escape the heat by swimming in rivers to exercise caution.

The Murrumbidgee Local Health District reminded swimmers that while rivers can be a great place to cool down, there are some measures which should be taken in order to remain safe.
The MLHD offered these tips to river swimmers:
- Always enter a river slowly, feet first, and never dive in
- Be aware at the water's edge as river beds can be unstable, uneven and slippery
- Check the speed of the river by throwing in a twig, and never swim in fast flowing water
- Never swim alone
- Be aware of submerged objects like rocks or snags under the water surface by looking for swirling water
- Understand your level of competence in the water and be safe
- Wear a personal floatation device when in a boat or boating area
MLHD disaster manager, Denise Garner, said rivers can be unpredictable.
"Rivers have different depths that change over time, with currents that change from hour to hour," she said.
"What might be a safe place in the morning, may not be safe in the afternoon."
Ms Garner also reminded MIA residents that water and alcohol do not mix, and to stay out of the water if you have been drinking.
