'Big plans' are in the pipeline said volunteer co-ordinator Leonie Kawelmacher with the aim of keeping the community connected and local children supported.
"We've got some big plans this year. We're going to open up Women's Group again where the women in the area come together to socialise and do courses," Ms Kawelmacher said.
"Last year we did a pile of courses like Food Supervision, which we hope to continue this year."
Despite a number of challenges ahead for Pioneer residents this year, including construction beginning on the Griffin Green project due to start February, Ms Kawelmacher is determined groups will go ahead to keep the community together.
"We are hoping to introduce a Kid's Group this year, something we've never done before," she said.
"Mums and dads can bring their little kids to the centre for an hour and they can sit down and chat while the kids play.
"We will do music and games and lots of singing."
The year's program kicked off Wednesday with a Back-To-School day where children learnt about what they could expect from the challenges of the first day at school.
"We talked about going to the teacher for help and what to do in case of an 'accident' at school," she said.
"We also talked about healthy eating and personal hygiene."
Ms Kawelmacher has organised a community meeting for Friday, January 22 to discuss concerns with Stage One of the Griffin Green construction which will see waste products such as asbestos removed from the mound in the middle of Dave Taylor Park.
"We just want to touch base with the community and to see if everybody understands what's going to be happening and what asbestos is," she said.
"We want to make sure everyone understands the health impact on the community."
