The Griffith branch of the State Emergency Services are looking to recruit some new volunteers to their ranks in January, and will holding a free information night Monday January 18 for interested residents.
"It is such a great way to help your community," SES Griffith department rescue officer Anthony Hatch said.
"We are involved in a lot of things and volunteers can choose what they want to do.
"We might get someone who starts off with us and says they only want to do one specific job, but two years on they might have a finger in every pie because it can be so rewarding and fun to learn everything."
Erin Sinclair, moved to Griffith from Newcastle a few years ago and decided to join the SES because she wanted to meet new people and give back to the community.
"I joined 12 months ago thinking I was only going to do admin, now I do everything," she said.
"She's got her hand up for everything, every course. In less than 10 months she could drive the rescue boat and now she hangs off hydrolic tools," Mr Hatch said of Ms Sinclair.
"It's so much fun driving that boat!" she said.
The SES are involved in a wide range of disaster responses and rescues such storm damage operation, road crash rescue, industrial and domestic rescues, searches for missing people and crime scene searches in assisting the police.
The Griffith unit, made up of men and women of all ages, professional backgrounds and life experiences says joining the SES is rewarding and fun.
"How else can you travel the country helping the community, meeting different people, playing with some of the most expensive toys and for free?" volunteer Brad Palmer said.
Griffth SES are looking for people who are community minded who genuinely want to help people in their time of need. All training is nationally recognised and volunteers can choose what they would like to get involved with, there is no pressure to take on everything.
