While some of these people will achieve their goals, many will inevitably taper off and eventually give up, before repeating the process again the next year.
Matthew Kenny, the owner of LiveFit 24/7, believes the key to avoiding this is to pace yourself.
"Don't come in and try to get all your fitness done in the first week," Mr Kenny said. "If you do five days a week straight off the bat, you will probably lose interest within two or three weeks."

"Come in, start gradually and work your way up to a good baseline, and then you can start adding days on to that."
Mr Kenny said his gym has already had a really good start to the year, but usually gets a big influx of new people around Australia Day, as many return from holidays and look to settle into their new routine.
It's a period he describes as hectic, but also one he looks forward to each year, so he's doing what he can to prepare his gym for the newcomers.
"We've got new equipment, we've got extra staff on, and there's extra classes and that sort of thing," he said.
"We try to create a really positive environment and we've got awesome coaches that can educate people in how to do things correctly without injury and ways to continue training to make fitness part of your lifestyle."
Mr Kenny recognised that entering the gym for the first time is a daunting prospect for many, but said the best thing to do is just take that first step and get in there.
"Once you're in there, you will realise it's nowhere near as scary as you thought it would be," he said.

According to Mr Kenny, everyone should do what they can to improve their fitness, even it it's not in the gym.
"With everything that's happened recently, it is important to have fitness in your life."
"Whether it's with a gym, in the park doing your own thing or just out riding a pushbike, it's just really great for your mental health and for relationships ... across the board it's a healthy thing to have in your life."
LiveFit 24/7 is running it's 'Griffith Movement' program at the end of January, a six week challenge which Mr Kenny said would be the perfect starting point for anyone beginning their fitness journey.
