A hugely successful past initiative to reduce unwanted litters of puppies and kittens will return for its second round of subsidised desexing for Griffith pet owners in January.

Community group Friends of Griffith Pound in partnership with Griffith City Council and local vets have combined to provide drastically discounted vouchers for pet owners to desex their pets, in efforts to reduce future rates of animals being euthanised.
Residents in the Griffith City Council catchment with valid pension or health care cards will be able to purchase vouchers on Saturday January 16 at Pets Domain from 10am until 2pm or until vouchers sell out.
"The main thing we are trying to do is to stop the flood of unwanted litters that are pouring into the pound. It is a never ending stream," member of Friends of Griffith Pound Virginia Tropeano explained about the aim of the initiative.
"We have all three of the Griffith vets that are supporting us this year which are Yoogali and Griffith Veterenary hospitals and All Creatures vet.
"So people who buy the vouchers with us will have their choice of vet that they use which is great."
The first desexing drive was held two years ago with tremendous success however, COVID restrictions saw 2020's campaign cancelled so Friends of Griffith Pound are looking forward to being able to offer the supportive program again.
"We received a great turn out the first desexing drive we did, we had queues of people lining up. There were a lot of people wanting to do it," Ms Tropeano said.
Ms Tropeano explained that when Friends of Griffith Pound formed roughly three years ago, they had the ambitious goal of no animals being euthanised in Griffith City Pound, a goal they feel they will make positive steps towards with Council's support.
"The aim of Friends of Griffith Pound is we would like to become a 'no-kill' pound, that's our long term goal," Ms Tropeano said.
"Friends of Griffith Pound is so happy with the support we are receiving from Griffith City Council with the desexing campaign.
"We think Council recognises it's an effective way to try to decrease the numbers of animals coming into the pound."
