Jodie Millar will swim 27 kilometres from Palm Beach to Shelley Beach, NSW on February 6 as part of a trifecta of marathon, open water swims raising money for the children's charity.
Ms Millar, who recently relocated back to Griffith after many years away, is aiming to raise $5000 for her Sydney leg of the challenge for an organisation that provides such vital support for children and families.
"As a teenager growing up in Griffith I knew of two Griffith children who received support from the Starlight Children's Foundation when they were undergoing treatment for serious medical conditions," Ms Millar said.
"I have chosen to support Starlight so that other children with significant health challenges can be supported.
"My fundraiser is called Swimming for Smiles and I hope to be able to raise these funds so that Starlight can put more smiles on the faces of seriously ill children in hospital."
On top of the Palm Beach event, Ms Millar will swim 25 kilometres from Fremantle to Rottnest Island in WA and 34 kilometres along the Derwent River in Tasmania in 2022, challenges she hopes will prepare her for her biggest personal goal in two years time.
"In August I secured a spot to swim the English Channel in August 2023. I have paid the deposit to secure my place. I wasn't able to secure an earlier spot, there is a big demand and a waiting list to gain a channel spot," Ms Millar said.
The Millar team will be at Bunnings Griffith tomorrow Saturday 9 from 9am to 3pm selling sausage sandwiches and cold drinks, with all proceeds going to Starlight. Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase to go in the draw to win prizes such as a Family Pass to Altina Zoo.
Ms Millar wished to thank the numerous Griffith businesses that have got behind her efforts with generous donations from Collier and Miller, Dom's Motors, Hancock Hampers, Bunnings Griffith, K-mart Griffith, Charlie Millar, the Whitton Malt House and Evie Fisher from Evielution Lifestyle Guidance.
Raffle tickets can be purchased from Griffith City Hire, Collier and Miller, or by texting or phoning 0402 548 375.
People wishing to donate directly to Ms Millar's cause can do so online through the Starlight Foundation website here.
