Richie Robinson has announced he is stepping down as general manager of Destination Riverina Murray after more than three years of showcasing the region's successful tourism offerings.

The tourism expert said his last day would be next Friday but the organisation would not be left to fend for itself.

"The recruitment process is already beginning so it's still full steam ahead for Destination Riverina Murray," Mr Robinson said.

Destination Riverina Murray's current business development manager, Sarah Hope, will step into the role of acting general manager until the permanent position is filled. Mr Robinson said the organisation was in good hands.

"The Riverina is really well placed to have a great 12 months ahead as a recovery and rebound process from COVID-19," he said.

"We're already having people visiting for the first time and so many other positive signs for Wagga and surrounds."

Mr Robinson said while he'd learned a lot from local businesses, the opportunities that lie ahead were exciting.

"There are so many amazing tourism businesses in the region who do a fantastic job, and having been able to see new ideas pop up and get off the ground is really amazing," he said.

"Being a part of the region's growth and watching it take huge steps forward has been a wonderful opportunity.

"My new job will be in Queanbeyan, so this is a great opportunity to have someone else step in and bring new, exciting ideas to DRM."

Despite the changes that lie ahead for Mr Robinson, he said he can't wait to see what's in store for the Riverina region as he watches from afar.

"I'm looking forward to watching businesses and communities continue to fill the role as such a great regional Australian destination," he said.

DRM is looking to have the new general manager role filled by early next year.
