Transport for NSW has reviewed the speed zone following community requests to improve safety around the shared pedestrian and cycling path.
The speed limit has been reduced to improve the safety of pedestrians using a refuge to cross the Kidman Way, and to improve safety for users of the shared path.
Transport for NSW south-west assistant director Jonathan Tasker said the review included crash history, road geometry and the mix and volume of traffic.
"The new shared path along Kidman Way from the Griffith CBD to the south of Hanwood includes a pedestrian refuge to allow for safe crossing of Kidman Way, which is currently in an 80 km/h speed zone," Mr Tasker said.
"To create a safer environment for all users of the path, the review recommended extending the 50 km/h speed limit for a distance of 150 metres to allow pedestrians and cyclists using the refuge to cross in a safer road environment with a reduced speed limit.
"The new 50 km/h speed limit will give motorists a safer stopping speed, reducing the likelihood of crashes, and with minimal increase to journey times."
The new limit is set to be in force from Monday, October 26.
