The accident happened on the highway at Alfredtown just after 7.30 on Wednesday morning, and has closed the road in both directions between Tumbarumba Road at Alfredtown and Elizabeth Avenue in Forest Hill.

Four crews and a specialist medical team via helicopter were dispatched to the scene. On arrival, paramedics treated a 37-year-old man for serious abdomen, pelvic and leg injuries.

He was airlifted to Canberra Hospital in a critical condition

Inspector Greg Allen, duty operations manager for NSW Ambulance, said accident involving a truck obviously gets the heart rate going.

"You are never too sure the extent of injuries until you arrive on scene," he said.

"Paramedics and emergency services never want to attend these types of accidents."

"We all need to be aware of our surroundings and be extra careful when driving any motor vehicle. We urge everyone to look out for each other on the roads."

The male driver of a Holden Colorado utility was trapped in his vehicle for close to an hour as emergency services worked to free him.

He sustained serious injuries and is being flown to hospital via helicopter.

The male driver of the mobile crane was not injured and has been taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

Five NSW Ambulance crews are on the scene, as well as a specialist medical helicopter.

A police spokesperson said the Sturt Highway was likely to remain closed for several hours and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

Traffic diversions are in place.

Traffic in both directions is being diverted via Tumbarumba Road, Gregadoo East Road and Elizabeth Avenue to return to the highway.

This diversion is suitable for all vehicles.
